Golden M*lk: How and Why

Recalling the ancient philosophy of Ayurveda, golden m*lk is an easy and delicious multi-dimensional taste experience. A taste-bud-tingling alternative to coffee, this comforting drink is perfect for any time of day.

Turmeric root has a thousand and one virtues including inflammation-soothing properties that can be for some, as effective as painkillers. All of the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial ingredients of this recipe work together to bolster the immune system, which lends legitimacy to the ancient Ayurvedic practice of using golden milk to help treat coughs and colds. For example, fabulously, the black pepper in this recipe, specifically, is said to boost the body's ability to absorb curcumin, the main bioactive compound within turmeric: so this spice blend works as a symphony. The other potential benefits of this concoction are to ease achy joints, improve digestion and gut health, boost your mood, keep your brain sharp and even look after your heart. 

If you can't get fresh turmeric, you can substitute 1 teaspoon of ground turmeric but it will have a distinctly different flavour.

Serves 2

i n g r e d i e n t s:

400ml almond milk
2 or 3cm chunk fresh turmeric root, or 1 tsp ground turmeric 
1 tbsp raw honey 
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon 
1/2 tsp ground cardamom 
5 whole black peppercorns 

Combine all ingredients in a blender and blend on high until the peppercorns have fully broken. Either drink cool and fresh or warm and comforting.
